Color Palette Generator: Complete Guide & FAQ

Everything you need to know about creating, customizing, saving, and exporting professional color palettes.

What is a Color Palette Generator?

A Color Palette Generator is a professional design tool that creates harmonious color combinations for your projects. It automatically generates complementary, analogous, triadic, and other color schemes based on color theory principles. Our generator creates 5-color palettes that you can customize, lock individual colors, and export in multiple formats including PNG, PDF, SVG, and Adobe ASE.

How do I generate a random color palette?

To generate a random color palette:

  • Click the "Random" button in the Create section, or
  • Press the Spacebar on your keyboard

Each press generates a completely new 5-color palette. You can also generate Light palettes (pastel, airy colors), Dark palettes (deep, rich colors), or create palettes based on a specific starting color using the "By Color" option.

Quick Start Workflow

1. Generate a palette (Random/Light/Dark/By Color) → 2. Lock colors you like → 3. Regenerate to find complementary colors → 4. Modify & fine-tune → 5. Save or Export

What palette generation modes are available?

Random
Generates completely random colors. Press Spacebar for quick generation. Best for exploration and inspiration.

Light
Creates lighter, pastel-toned palettes. Colors are lightened and slightly saturated. Perfect for soft, airy designs.

Dark
Generates deeper, richer colors. Colors are darkened and saturated. Ideal for dramatic, bold designs.

By Color
Creates a monochromatic palette from your chosen color. Use the color picker to select your base color, then generate.

How does the 'By Color' palette generation work?

The 'By Color' feature creates a monochromatic palette from your chosen base color. It generates 5 harmonious variations by adjusting the lightness while maintaining the same hue and saturation. This creates a cohesive palette perfect for designs that need visual unity—the generated colors range from lighter tints to darker shades of your selected color.

How do I create a palette from a specific brand color?

  1. Click "By Color" and enter your brand's hex code in the color picker
  2. Click the button to generate a monochromatic palette
  3. Lock your brand color by clicking its lock icon
  4. Generate new palettes with Random, Light, or Dark—your locked brand color stays
  5. Use Tints & Shades or Color Variations for more options

Can I lock colors while generating new palettes?

Yes! Click the lock icon on any color column or press 'L' on your keyboard when a color is focused. Locked colors (indicated by a yellow border and locked icon) will remain unchanged when you generate new palettes. This is perfect for:

  • Building a palette around a specific brand color
  • Finding complementary colors for an existing design element
  • Keeping colors you love while exploring new combinations

Can I modify all colors at once?

Yes! Use the Modify All buttons to adjust your entire palette simultaneously:

Lighten — Adds white to all unlocked colors

Darken — Adds black to all unlocked colors

Saturate — Increases color intensity/vibrancy

Desaturate — Decreases intensity (more muted)

Note: These modifications respect locked colors—only unlocked colors will be affected.

How do I adjust individual colors?

Each color column has individual controls:

  • Color Picker (sliders icon) — Choose any color precisely
  • Lighten/Darken buttons — Quick brightness adjustments
  • Tints & Shades — See 23 lighter and darker variations
  • Color Variations — See 12 analogous colors
  • Hex input — Manually enter any hex code

What's the difference between Tints, Shades, and Color Variations?

Tints & Shades

Shows 23 variations of your color mixed with white (tints/lighter) and black (shades/darker) at different percentages. Perfect for:

  • Finding the exact lightness you need
  • Creating hover/active states for UI
  • Building monochromatic designs

Color Variations

Shows 12 analogous colors—colors that share similar hue angles on the color wheel. Perfect for:

  • Finding naturally harmonious combinations
  • Exploring adjacent colors
  • Creating smooth color transitions

Usage: Click any color in the Tints & Shades or Variations panel to apply it to your palette immediately.

How do I save my color palettes?

Press 'S' on your keyboard or click the Save button to open the save dialog. You have two storage options:

Browser Storage

  • Saves locally on your device
  • Works offline
  • No account required
  • Won't sync across devices

Cloud Storage
